Default What PVR are you using?

(Apologies for including this in digital-tv as well but .pvr seems a
bit dead.)

A couple of years ago it seemed that Humax and Topfield were generally
the top choices for PVR.

Now it seems that there are numerous options.

So what did you opt for and how do you find it?

There would be the occasional program that I would like to "archive",
like with VCR I would keep the tape. Any of these PVR's allow
reasonable transfer from HD to DVD or computer?

Three Vestel T825 based Freeview PVRs, bought cheaply end of line,
seem pretty robust and the UI is easy to use IMHO. Not all attachced
to the same telly.;-) One Pace V3 SKY+ box bought for fiver from a
charity shop. Works OK although I prefer the Vestels' UI.

If you want to do digital transfer to PC then I think all the Humaxes
do it, although last time I was following the issue the transfer was
slow and buggy.

Both the Vestels and Sky+ boxes have a basic archiving/editing
playback facility so you can do a real time analogue transfer to DVD
recorder or HDD via capture card.

Terrestrial or satellite?

Some of the recently developed add ons for the Humax HDR make it very
easy to transfer files to your PC via network connection. Making DVDs
takes more effort though.

These days you can record HD broadcasts. 2-3 hours of F1 in HD occupies
quite a few GB.

I would look for a PVR that allows streaming to a TV using UPnP (DLNA).
Though it is important to ensure that the TV can read the file format
that the PVR uses.

Same here, the Hitachi HRD253 version of the T825 with 250gb HD,
got it for 15quid at a car boot sale.

It has ver 12.3 software, anyone any idea when the next OTA update
for ver 13.0 or ver 13.3 is?

A Humax FOXSAT-HDR for Freesat, and a Humax HDR-FOX T2 for Freeview.
(What a stupid naming system, by the way).

I bought Humax products because I've had good service from an old 9200
(still working fine in its new home), and because the reviews and
general consensus amongst enthusiasts is that the Humax products are
the least crap of all of them.

Humax, like everyone else, throws half-baked product into the market,
knowing they can update the software later. Even so, each Humax
product has a know bug-list, and most never get fixed.

However, they do use the updates to add significant new functionality
(Freeview+ to the 9200, and this latest thing - I can't remember the
name of it - where they can access content via the Internet).

I'm not sure what the situation is with the current generation of
Humaxes.

I use the old 9200. I believe the supplied software for transfer was
problematic, but there was third-party software that (with a hardware
modification that voided the warranty, but was easy and safe) worked
well.

Arguably there's no need for transfer to PC with the large hard drives
in the latest models.

Of course there is, if you want to do something else with the content
apart from play it back on the local machine.

Media Controller (better) does the job of the supplied Media eLinker without
any hardware modification - it just uses the USB port. There are other
programs people have written - humaxrw and humaxcheck - which require a
direct connection to the HDD and do more complicated things.
