with one Scart) it is the Select button. Some TVs can reach the
externals by using the CH- button to step below 1. YMMV.

VCR switching should be done via the pin 8 of the Scart cable when you
use Play or setting the timer (We do have an old model which doesn't do
it for programing).

Yep, got it. Thanks to you and to everyone else who replied. Its the
help button and it works fine. And, as it happens, we've now lost the
TV remote, so we got there just in time!

Have you got fully wired SCART cables? That's the most likely reason
for it not to auto-switch. Just seeing all the pins at each end
doesn't necessarily mean that it's fully wired, though. You might
like to invest in one cable (doesn't have to be expensive) to see if
it will auto-switch. Unless your TV won't do it, though that would be
unusual.
