Default take off hard disk on sky hd set

I don't use my hd box for recording only as a freesat box with a ftv card
from sky. I Is there any way to cut out the hard disk either manually or
set up.
thanks

Is it the noise that bothers you?

You can't do it in software, so the only way to know is to open the
box up and pull the power lead out of the back of the hard drive. It's
just a standard hard drive like in your PC.

I'm not sure how the box will respond, but the only to know is to try
it.

To be fair I've never tried but put it this way - I would be _extremely_
surprised if the box continued to work at all after you'd removed the
hard disk.

the night even though the set is in stand-by

I have a vague memory - possible from a posting by Jomtien - that Sky+
boxes used to boot fine with no HD (hard disc) but then the firmware was
changed so it wouldn't boot without one. He used to use old tiny HDs for
the purpose. I expect the same is now the case with High Definition
Digiboxes; they'll need a hard disc to boot but it doesn't have to be big.

The hard drive doesn't hold any information that the box needs in order to
operate as far as I know, or at least it seems that way. I bought a brand
new 2TB Western Digital drive, put it in my PC and used Copy+ to set it up
before putting it in my Amstrad DRX890 Sky+ HD box. The drive obviously
could not have had anything on there that was needed by the box to boot, but
it did indeed boot and started to work as expected straight away.

Now, whether Sky have somehow managed to make the box check for the presence
of a drive and only continue to work if there is a drive present, I don't
know.

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is that they now cache series
link information and program information on the hard drive. If you
remember back to the days of the old planner, pressing series link
often took 20 seconds before the series link appeared, as did pressing
Info on a programmer for more information.

Whether or not this information is required for startup is another
matter.

Do you have recordings set at these times? If not maybe it's Sky
Anytime, which can be switched off from the menu somewhere.

It is indeed Anytime. If you have no recordings, have Anytime off, and
put the box in Standby, after a few minutes the hard drive powers down
and doesn't spin up again until you switch the box back on.

The box stores seven days worth of TV guide information, not just the
series link, so that has to be updated every six hours. I don't know
what would happen if the disk was not there to receive it.

Also I suspect that Sky keep checking to see if you have watched a box
office film (this may not be applicable to Freeview from Sky).
