Which 'new' boxes are you referring to?

I had my old Thomson box replaced by Sky about 12 months ago. It was
replaced with an Amstrad (smaller in physical size than the old Thomson).
SFAIAA, these smaller Amstrads are 'the latest' boxes.

Overall it is better than the Thomson - but it has still 'hung'
occasionally. I had to unplug it a couple of days ago because it would not
respond to any buttons - either on the remote or on the box itself. It has
always 'reset' ok, however - and faster than the old Thomson used to reboot.

OK - no, I don't have one of those and so I cannot comment.

I'm into my 2nd 1TB box in 15 months. And, yes, the new one (3 months old)
still hangs - twice so far. PITA - so much so I'm on the verge of going
Virgin!

I've been doing a bit of research into this recently. We've got a standard
definition Amstrad Sky+ box with a 250GB disk in it but we're filling it up
quite a lot recently so I decided to look around for alternatives. We have
no interest in going Hi Def but the HD boxes have much bigger hard drives -
a couple of traders on Ebay are offering the Amstrad DRX 890 with a 2TB
drive at around the £180 mark.

Looking around at various forums such as this
http://www.skycopyplus.co.uk/forum/v....php?f=7&t=856 and the AVForum,
there's lots of info to DIY it so I've just got an Amstrad DRX 890 from Ebay
(believe it or not, it's just arrived as I'm typing this!!!) for just under
£50 and I've ordered a Western Digital WD20EVDS from CCL Computers at £86 -
so I'll have a 2TB Amstrad DRX 890 for £136 and the 500GB disk that was in
the box will now be put to good use in my computer :-)
