depends what you're planning to do with it - use it for pay channels in
another room? - need multi room.
watch free channels in another room? - just use it without a card unless you
have to have the free to view ones too.

If you purchase a multi-room subscription costing £10.25 per
month, Sky will provide an additional viewing card. The
multi-room subscription which will allow you to view free
channels and all of your subscription channels in another room.
Both receivers must be connected to the same, working telephone
line.

If you don't want to pay £10.25 per month, you have the following
alternatives:

1. Use the box with no card. You will still be able to
receive Free to Air (FTA) channels (which include the entire
range of BBC channels). However, you will not be able to watch
Free to View (FTV) channels. If you don't insert a card, the
regional variations on EPG channels 101, 102 & 103 will probably
differ from your present location. Last time I checked, the
default regional variations were BBC1 London, BBC2 England and
ITV3 Central (West Midlands). If you want to check FTA
availability, connect the old receiver to your dish (without a
card).

2. If you want to watch FTV channels, you must insert a
viewing card. An expired card will usually suffice - and you
don't need to pay a monthly subscription.

3. To watch the full range of FTA and FTV channels (including
the correct regional variations), you could pay £25 as a a
one-off fee, to purchase a "Freesat from Sky" card. See
www.sky.com/shop/freesat/home/faq/#3 - and click on "I already
have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?"

What are the channels that you are going to be watching.....?

Have you got the SKY+ for the films and sport .....?

If not, after your commitment for 12 months is up, I suggest you get
yourself a Freesat+ box and give Mr Murdoch his marching orders, thereby
saving yourself some bread.....

Freeview and Freesat are entirely different systems.

Freeview digital channels come from local terrestrial
transmitters Freesat channels come from the Astra and Eurobird
satellites at 28.2°E / 28.5°E. See
www.freesat.co.uk/how-to/faqs/freesat.

Your new TV has an integrated digital tuner - to receive
terrestrial Freeview channels. Obviously, you must connect your
TV to a suitable aerial. However, you do not require a separate
set-top box, merely to receive Freeview programmes .

Panasonic and a few other manufacturers sell a range of [rather
expensive] TVs with integrated Freesat tuners. Alternatively,
you could purchase a separate Freesat+ or Freesat+ HD set-top
box, to receive and record FTA & FTV satellite channels.

To view Freesat transmissions on your ordinary digital TV, you
must connect your satellite dish to a Freesat, a Freesat+ or a
Freesat HD set-top box. You would not have to pay any
subscription to Sky, if you use a non-Sky set-top box. Google
"Freesat+ hd" for various options.

Alternatively, you could use your old Sky+ receiver as a set-top
box, to receive "Freesat from Sky". However, you would have to
pay £10.25 per month for a multiroom subscription or £10.25 per
month for a stand-alone Sky+ subscription - if you want to use
the record / playback functions of your old Sky+ receiver. A
multiroom subscription is a better deal, because you would be
able view the same the program line-up as your primary Sky
subscription (including any premium channels).
