Dimensioning in mm means that you don't need to show the units. For
plans of domestic buildings etc you rarely get above 5 digits.

It would still be 5 digits if it was dimensioned in metres.
Centimetres invite confusion.

A friend of mine was very anti-metrification but derived great satisfaction at meetings
by deriding anybody who mentioned centimeters as only metres and millimeters were
approved units.

The best part of 40 years ago I wanted some chipboard cut to size and found an old
fashioned hardware store locally who would do it.

As a precaution, I converted the metric measurements (800 x 550 x 19) to imperial before
I went and I recall the distinct look of relief when I offered the imperial option.

So I reeled off the length and width in inches and sixteenths, ending up with "by three-
quarters".

"Ah, sorry sir, it'll have to be 19mm - it's all metric now, you know!"

They didn't seem to understand why I burst into laughter ...
