Sky insist that a (white) Sky card needs to be paired with the
box in use for Freesat. Is this true or is it just script?

I was always of the belief that pairing was only necessary where
chargeable services were/are involved. Certainly experience
suggests that an already activated card will work in any box. Sky
say that eventually the 'wrong box' caption will appear but I
have yet to see it.

Mine did but I've forgotten why.

I had to pair mine but that was awhile ago.

My parents stopped subscribing to Sky about 10 years ago but kept their
installation untouched and watched the free channels.
About 3 years ago I replaced their truly ancient Pace receiver with my 4
month old Amstrad. I took the expired card out of the Pace and put it in the
Amstrad and it recognised the correct regions and all the free to view
channels.........and still does!

I hooked up an old SKY+ box in the kitchen with an old blue card to set the
regions and found that not only did this work but the SKY+ recording still
works on the free channels. Been like this for over 6 months now. :-)

This should not decode ANY FTV channels any longer! However as you have
obviously totally missed the "Sky+ kill" signals that facility should
last for (perhaps!) ever!

I have a sky+ box and old card which I disconnected before the end of
contract about a month ago. I might plug em in and see what happens!

"Net wisdom" is that you will NEVER outrun the kill signals for subscription
channels (but they do get less frequent with time!). The "Sky+ kill"
signal may stop after some months.

I'll leave it for a while then and try in the spring.
