The only contractual part about the telephone line is, when you have
a Sky-discounted box, you have to have the phone line connected to it
for 12 months minimum, from start of contract. If you buy a 2nd hand
box there is no telephone connection requirement. With a Sky supplied
new or re-con box that YOU HAVE HAD for over a year, no phone
requirement.

Correct. However, multiroom subscribers must have both boxes connected
to the phone line permanently.

A good friend of mine had a warning letter from Sky as his second box was
not connected to the phone line. They threatened to take him off Multiroom
and bill him for two separate accounts.

He phoned them and explained it was a tortuous job to get a phone line into
the second room which he was working on. He was told that they would take no
further action for three months. Within that time we fitted a phone socket
which solved the problem.

Admittedly this was about 4 years ago!

A friend of mine received exactly the same warning last month so Sky are
still very proactive on this issue.

Right - common sense time!
While Sky can see your box(es) and their serial number(s) etc, what they
CANNOT see is which room they are in. The agreement is that a free or
discounted box (that's BOX, with a unique serial number and card number)
must be connected to a telephone line for 12 months minimum from
installation. I imagine that 12 months would normally start from
installation, but where Sky have said "OK - you've got 3 months to get it
connected" or similar, then the 12 months would start from the date of
telephone connection, not box installation. That's fair enough.
So why not swap the boxes around year by year? As stated, Sky cannot see
what room they are in....
Admitted, this will not work with a multi-room installation from scratch,
only when adding a further box a year or more later..
