As this is for an 83 year-old who has difficulty with most things technical I decided to go for Sky as, like it or not, it is just about the easiest to use. (Try using a Grundig Freesat box and you'll see what I mean.) What is more if she gets into difficulties I can talk her through it easily by phone. The downside is the occasional need to de-power a Sky box to unfuddle its brain - and I understand the Humax Freesat boxes are not much better. -- Woody harrogate three at ntlworld dot com |

When I first got sky+ (jan 2008) I was unplugging to clear freezes two or three times pw but withing a few months an update had fixed that. In the last two years I can only remember having to reboot once. Mike |

Gary Does it record the programs whilst you where away? I went away a few weeks after I got Sky+ and after 2 days all the recordings failed. As I said an update came through and since then it's been fine. Mike |

Mike no it will work for 1 day or 3 weeks no way to tell. but it seems to know when we have gone away waits 2 hours then every thing fails. |

When I go away I leave every piece of electronics that I require to keep running unattended (including all servers, DSL modems, routers, PVRs and Slingboxen) on time switches. The most reliable are re-booted each week but PVRs are rebooted each day. Turning these units off for just one minute around 4am revives whatever has managed to become hung up. Servers that are not sulking can be set to shut themselves down in anticipation of the power loss. I don't recommend this to anyone else but it suits me fine. Tony My SKY+ box reboots in the wee hours automatically I think. I've seen/heard it a couple of times when I've fallen asleep in front of the TV. This may be the solution to the crashes I had. Mike |
