If you stopped the HD subscription of £10.00 p/m can you still use the box
like a Sky Plus one ??

Cheers

Yes. They aren't making/supplying the 'ordinary' Sky+ box anymore so anyone
with a faulty one now gets an HD box with the HD side inactive.

Sky charge £10 per month, if you want to use of the Sky+
functions on a stand alone basis. However, they waive the £10
charge, if you continue your subscription to ANY of the Sky
subscription channels.

It follows that provided you don't cancel your subscription
entirely, Sky+ functions should remain available. Even if you
cancel all Sky subscriptions, you will still be able to watch any
of the free HD channels that are listed in the Sky EPG (BBC HD,
ITV HD, etc).

When you telephone Sky to cancel the HD element of your
subscription, make sure you advise them that you still require
the Sky+ functions. Otherwise, they might turn off Sky+ as well.

On a separate note, never disclose your real email address in a
public newsgroup. Too late now. However, you run the risk of
receiving massive volumes of junk emails.

That's total rubbish! It isn't "inactive" at all! A Sky+HD box - with no
subscription to SkyHD - will receive BBCHD, ITV1HD, Luxe HD, C4HD and
FiveHD (the latter two with any current smartcard - even an expired
subscription one)

I don't believe that's true, I have been using the same _valid_ email
address for years yet I average less than one junk email per day.

It could be your ISP filters them out.

Most of the spam (brides from eastern europe, prescription meds, 'rolex'
watches etc) gets filtered out by my ISP and I can go and view them if
wish but if I didn't know where to look I would be unaware.

I get other crap in my inbox that I have 'asked' for such as email
flyers for retailers I purchased stuff from.

I've had my current email for 3 years have never used it in a ng but am
pretty free with it. I get anything from 20-60 spam emails pd filtered
by my ISP.

My googlemail account that I've only ever used for ng received hundreds
of spam emails. I've never given it out so the ONLY place it could have
been obtained from is the various ng I've posted to.

I can assure you that it is true. Perpetrators use Spybot
programs to extract addresses from NNTP Newsgroups (and other
sources). Then, they sell the data to spammers.

Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent spammers from using a
valid email address, once it has entered the public domain. I
experienced this problem several years ago - and had to abandon
my primary email address, because it had become a target for
thousands of junk messages.

A Google search against 'email address in newsgroups' even
identifies programs that can be used to extract email addresses
from NNTP newsgroups. I don't intend to publish details of
Spybot programs here. However, if you don't believe me, have a
look at the following links:

http://www.ilopia.com/Articles/Secur...Newsgroup.aspx
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/ou...snewreader.htm

Both authors are well-known in technical newsgroups - and have
been recognised by Microsoft as 'Most Valuable Professionals' or
'MVPs'. Michael Stevens is a leading expert on Outlook Express.

So why run the risk? Upon the assumption that you are using
Outlook Express, Outlook, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail or a
similar program to access newsgroups, it is not difficult to
configure the program, so that it substitutes a fictitious
address for your real address. For the record, I use Windows
Live Mail to access newsgroups. Consequently, I have configured
my news account in WLMail to quote my email address as
- which is fictitious.

I had a spam bot planted in my PC.
It pumped out adverts for cheap watches in English to addresses in Taiwan.

If there's one around advertising english brides to either russian or
thai addresses plse send it to me!
