I have a 2 year old Pany Plasma with Freesat HD. I use a Sky HD box .
My TV sound is via HDMI and i use a Kenwood AV amp for 5.1 etc The Phono sound from the sky box is sent to the TV in the Kitchen and a little Amp for good sound. the two amps sound good together. Because of the delay on the TV the sound echo's if you have on the Amp sound and the TV sound at the same time. As the kitchen is off the Living room obviously the sound leaks. and so I have a problem. I wanted to match up the sound using the delay function but this is harder than you think. Any tips as to how to do it. The main problem is it will only adjust whilst playing live sound so recordings don't work. ( unless you know better) I will get there but it is frustrating. The ears play tricks on you. ( frequency dependant etc) . Anyone know how big the delay is on a pany Plasma.? Thanks in advance Gary You can adjust the sound delay (on the optical output to your 5.1 sound system) while a show is on (not a recording). Put a suitable channel on, and go to the sound settings and press select and it will show (and allow you to hear) the sound of the channel. You can then use left/right to increase/decrease the delay. If you have the sound up to a level where you can hear both TVs, then all you need to do is adjust the delay until the echo goes away. If you adjust the delay in the wrong direction the echo will get worse. However, you're going to have a whole bunch of problems. You mentioned you use Phono, HDMI, and 5.1 (I assume via Optical). All of these have different delays. The phono is instant, the HDMI is slightly slower as the sound has to be encoded and decoded to/from digital, so some data has to be sent before the decoding can start. The Optical is on its own delay (as set in the settings). So, there's three levels of delay there, and at best you can only match Optical to either of the other two, as it's the only adjustable one. But, your biggest problem will be that the optical delay is a DELAY meant to slow down the audio getting to your TV. Modern TVs do a ton of processing on the picture, and LCD and Plasma screens themselves have a delay of their own before the pixels illuminate in the desired colour. So, the picture is always a few 10s of milliseconds behind the audio. Hence, you have an audio DELAY setting. This is probably the opposite of what you want. You probably want the 5.1 system to catch up to your Phono / HDMI audio. Setting the delay to 0 might make it close to the Phono. With the HDMI delay you have a different issue. The TV manufacturer will know what delay the screen has, and add a pre-set delay to the HDMI sound input. So there will be no way to match the HDMI audio to the Phono. Finally, to rub salt in the wound, different channels on Sky have different delays in a right mess of an attempt to get sound on HD channels synchronised with the sound on SD channels. It's a right mess because at first HD took longer to display than SD, but this is not always the case. For example modern TVs will do a shed load of processing on SD content to upscale it to HD, but often tend to leave HD content alone other than to increase the frame rate. So, on some TVs, HD displays faster than SD. In short, you have to deal with three different delays from your hardware, different delays from different channels, and you can only adjust one delay (optical), and whatever you set will either mean the sound is in sync with one of your other devices, OR it will be in synch with ONE channel or set of channels. -- Vincent |

The delay applied to them is the same. as you adjust the delay they both change. As to synchronising to the picture that is a different matter. I figured if I can synchronise the HDMI to the Optical I have by default matched the panel. BUT as for errors from sky etc I am not even going to go there. My TV sound is used for Night viewing and convenience. The 5,1 is used when we sit down to watch the TV or a movie. and the TV in the kitchen is on when we are doing nothing in particular. that's when the problem occurs and i have tried to do the adjustments but it is difficult. as i said the ears play tricks on you. If so this should have the delay built in. Of course the sound will now be out of sync when watching in the kitchen... I have the same problem, and can route the sound by two different ways. One makes it in sync between rooms, one in sync with the pictures. -- *When it rains, why don't sheep shrink? * Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |
