Following a post in this forum recently, I phoned up the nice people in
Sky on Sunday 23 May to enquire about the no-cost (apart from monthly HD sub) self-install option. Ordered box and it arrived on Friday 28 May. As we were away over the weekend, I did the self install yesterday (31 May). Mild hiccup when an HD recording failed. Phoned Sky who said their system was down and they could not activate box until this morning. This morning another operative told me the box was already activated and married to my viewing card. A test recording of an HD channel proved this to be so. So, I thought, this was a fairly painless transfer. Until I switched on my PC. My broadband speed, not very good at the bast of times - at the limit of the line - usually gives me 1.8Mbps. I was dismayed to find the speed down to 480Kbps! Re-booted and it fell even further to 160k. A bit of investigation showed that, if I disconnect the Sky HD box from the phone line, I regain my "full" speed, but as soon as I re-connect it, the speed falls. Has anybody else had this experience? Did they get it sorted by Sky (am about to phone them)? -- George from Cartland |

Daft question, but you are definitely connecting the Sky box _after_ the ADSL filter, aren't you? i.e. phone socket | ADSL filter / \ ADSL router phone splitter / \ Sky HD phones If an ADSL filter is doing its job right I don't think anything connected on the "phone" side of it should be able to really affect the quality of the ADSL signal. It's possible that your filter isn't up to snuff. (also to Ian Pawson) The set up is the same as my previous Sky+ box and Sky box; all I've done is swap the phone connection from the Sky+ to the Sky+HD box. The other end is hardwired (by original Sky installer) into main phone socket and has not had any noticeable effect on my broadband speed since Sky was installed (about 15 years ago!). Have just re-connected Sky box again and checked broadband speed which seems to be holding at 1.4M, which I can live with. Would installing a filter between the Sky box and the phone cable work? Have a spare, so will try that later, if the speed crashes again. Thanks for your input. -- George from Cartland |

I have now installed a filter when the speed dropped again after re-connection of SkyHD box to phone line. Broadband speed now 1.4Mbps - slightly slower than status quo ante. -- George from Cartland |
