Hi,

I hope that one of you learned people would be kind enough to respond...

I live in a block of flats that has a communal Sky feed, as such I thought
I'd see what was on FreeSat & bought a Pace BSkyB 2600CI (not sure about the
letters now, but the ususal one) from a boot sale, picked up a 10m Ross
Satellite cable & plugged everything in.

I get sound on my TV, but no picture. I've tried both CoAx & 2 different
scarts from the box to the TV.

I don't have a Sky FreeSat card, but I understand that I don't really need
one & that it would just add the EPG - is this correct?

Is the most likely explanation that I've been sold a dud box, or am I doing
something elese wrong?

Thanks for reading, hope you can help.

Cheers,
Dom.

Reboot the box
i.e. switch it of and then back on again at the mains. do it a couple of
times if necessary.
Do you get any display menu's etc if not then most likely the box.

A dud box is quite likely, you would probably be better off with a new
Freesat box, £29.99 from Argos, and that would have a guarantee.

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, if I'm being thick... FreeSat from BBC/ITV & FreeSat from Sky both
come from the same satellite, am I right? Therefore, same dish, etc. just
something inside the recieving box that chooses between the two?

Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply,

I've tried a hard reboot, but i'll try a few more times to make sure. The
screen is completely black, not even a flicker.

Thanks again.

Correct, the Freesat from sky box will need a card for some channels.
The BBC/ITV Freesat box doesn't have a card but doesn't have all the
free channels e.g.. fiver, fiveUS and Sky 3.

I suspect a faulty box.

You have tried an RF connection (using co-ax cable), in addition
to a Scart lead. You can hear the soundtrack, but the picture is
completely black (no display - not even any of the Sky menus).

That indicates the problem is in the Sky receiver or the TV - and
not the result of a faulty Scart lead.

Incidentally, you don't require a viewing card card to receive
Free to Air (FTA) channels. However, without a card, the EPG
does not display the full range of channels. You will also lose
some of the regional variations, because the EPG will also
default to BBC1 (London) on 101, BBC2 (England) on 102, and ITV3
(Central - West Midlands) on 103. Furthermore, you won't be able
to receive encrypted Free to View (FTV) channels - as opposed to
channels that are genuinely FTA.

Try connecting your Sky receiver to a different TV? If you
suffer the same problems with a different TV, then you can be
99.99% certain that you have a faulty Sky receiver (provided the
various connections are definitely correct).

Similarly, if you experience the same symptoms, if you connect a
different Sky receiver, then that would point to a problem with
the TV (or in the connections between the Sky box and the TV).

Exactly, the type of box knows which platform (i.e. program guide) to use.

... and in most cases both types of box use the same incoming signals
to produce your audio and video output, the main exception being
Channel 4 unless that has changed.

Thank you to everyone who has responded, I've learnt a lot! I will try the
suggestions that I haven't already tried, but I think that my £5 bargain
wasn't so much of a bargain!

Thanks again,
Dom.

you could list the digi box on eBay as for spares and see how much you can
get for it.
I would go for a Freesat box at around £30 they are good value. or a HD pvr
type for around £100 plus a hard disk.

Good luck
Gary
