Default Sky+ Installation & Cable Routing.

Had the Sky+ upgrade as a treat for the family before xmas. I wasn't
able to be there for the installation, but what can go wrong? So I left
it to the missus.

The installer has routed the 2nd cable across the middle of the front of
the house, the original Sky cable travels along the eaves (hidden)
untill it drops down (again hidden behind a drainpipe) to near enough
where the telly is.

Being NOT very happy with the way the cable was routed I rang Sky to
request it be re-routed, my request was initially denied untill I asked
them to come & take it away, cable, box, subscription, everything. I
watch very little telly & the external appearance of my house is far
more important to me than 100hrs of TV endlessly repeated across 100
channels.

The installer returned today only to point out to me that Health &
Safety rules forbid him to extend his ladder to the eaves without
drilling & fitting an anchor point to tie the ladder too !

"So H&S are OK that you drill & fit an anchor point without the ladder
being tied to an anchor then?"

We agreed to disagree & leave the cable where it is for now but can
anyone confirm that Sky installers are restricted in their use of
ladders on H&S grounds before I committ to another 3hrs on hold to ask
them to take it all away.

HSE rules or Sky H&S rules?

Bill should be able to answer you, but I suspect that there is no direct
stipulation from HSE that you will not use a ladder above x height without
anchoring it. Risk Assessments being the answer to virtually every question
these days.

Working at Height Regs 2005
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/SI/si2005/20050735.htm#sch6 Schedule 6 applies.

I've taken the plunge and ordered Sky+ for installation next Wednesday. I'm
intending to run another WF100 from the dish to the lounge via my own custom
hidden route before the Sky fitter gets here. He will only have two plugs
and some self amalg tape to fit. The last cowboy they sent didn't have any
self amalg and left the cable in a lovely loop hanging down the wall.

Any use of ladders...even a single ladder...and the Sky installer HAS to
anchor the ladder to the wall using a 10mm eyebolt. Its a new thing that
came in about six to eaight weeks ago. the also have to wear a full fall
arrest harness when working on a single ladder

Why put the dish so high up - mine is a metre off the ground, and invisible?

Is this a new Sky policy for their fitters, and does it apply to subbies?

Its been around for a few months with Sky installers. Word is its SUPPOSED
to filter down to the subbies but it seems very doubtful
