Seeking MPEG-2 Encoder with Compression by Matti Lamprhey
I'd like to be able to produce compressed MPG files from DVDs recorded on my LiteOn recorder. Are any PC tools available to do this? Background: I have a Humax PVR9200-T as well as the LiteOn. If I record the same 1-hour programme from ITV3 on each, using the LiteOn's HQ quality setting so that the two recordings are of similar quality, and then transfer both to my PC (using Media eLinker...

what aerial by Jackie
Hi I live about 35kms from the Angus transmitter and at present get a grainy but watchable analogue picture. I have bought a digital tuner for my computer and I get reasonable reception on most channels but feel that a new bigger aerial would be better as I think that water may have got into the cable as when I measure the resistance it is almost a direct short. Old analogue meter so cannot...

Five US by Mark Fraser (News)
I see that on Thursday Five US has got a Uefa football match with Newcastle. Now, I can't seem to find a link between US programming which is what Five US is supposed to be showing and Newcastle FC. -- ___________________________________________ |\ /| ark Fraser | \/ | Somerset /www.mfraz.freeserve.co.uk | |__________/Acorn SA RISC PC You know what...

Anyone tried Evesham PVR 160? by Steve
Does anyone have any experience with using the Evesham PVR 160 or know of any good reviews? It is a dual tuner Freeview unit with a 160 Gb HD on offer at Woolies for 149 so seems like a good buy. One worry would be as it is a relatively unknown manufacturer, would it be updated on air regularily? I have a Freeview set top box which has never received an on air upgrade when my other unit has...

Monitor for TV by Geoff Lane
I'm currently using a video sender unit for TV reception in an area of my home where running a TV aerial would be difficult. I would like to purchase an LCD screen for this room but the screens with TV tuners are considerably more expensive than computer monitors. As with my present set up I am not using a TV tuner I'd like to consider just a computer monitor but the input is different. Anyone...

News multiscreen query by Nildram news
Just intrigued really... When I exit BBC News Multiscreen where we get the bewildering choice of two "streams" (sorry, don't know the technical term !), for a fraction of a second, there is a third stream showing on the right hand of the screen showing BBC Parliament (I think !). Why is that and is the number of "streams" restricted due to limitations of the digital terrestrial system or...

More Labour stupidity.... by Gendy
From "Energy Saving Trust" via the BBC: "TVs: On average a traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) television set uses 100 watts of power when in use and about two watts on standby. Analysis: Why UK 'must try harder' Newer LCD and plasma screens are higher users of energy, with the largest models consuming up to 400 watts when in use and about four watts on standby. "

Best Dual DVB-T card by Slitheen
Looking to upgrade my old Hauppauge Nova-t PCI (model 909) to a much better card. I've not been following the progression of the market though, and have no idea who makes the best cards today, with best support (EPG etc). All I know is Hauppauge don't seem to make a real effort with their stuff, and would like a move away from their products. I want a dual DVB-t tuner specifically. Doesn't...

Sky HD Price Drop by [email protected]
Just a heads up that the cost of Sky HD will probably be coming down soon. The following evidence is presented: 1. Existing Sky subscribers can now purchase a Sky HD box for 200 and get it fitted by an independent retailler at the price determined by the retailer (around 60). 2. At The Ideal Home Exhibition is London recently you could sign up for Sky HD for 200 (plus new subscription). 3....

What DTV tuner for PC? by Nigel Molesworth
I've had a Nebula for a while now, but I've got two problems with it. The software seems to make my PC unstable, I often get Desktop icons vanishing, and secondly it won't fit in my new PC case unless I remove the motherboard first (one of the antenna sockets fouls the case). My requirements a Watch & record DTV Timer, preferably one that wakes up the PC Burn DVD with recorded files without...

2 Boxes, 2 aerials? by Rory
Hi, I've been told by my local electronics shed that if I want to run 2 set top boxes in my household I'm going to have to install an aerial for each on the roof. Is there any way round this as I'm not even sure there's enough room on the chimney for 2 (let alone the extra cost and time involved)? Regards Rory

Freeview: BBC Parliament to go full screen. by PGG
Just in time for the State Opening of Parliament, it seems: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2006/10_october/25/parliament.shtml No more squinting at captions too small to read with the sound up to a second out of sync. I've no idea where the capacity is coming from. Hopefully they'll scrap the gimmicky news interactive ******** that only gets watched by

FiveUS dog by leon
This is the response from five re the size of the dog on 5us: Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding the DOG on Five US. There are no current plans to stop using or reduce the size of the DOG on Five US. Station identity is increasingly important in the age of competitive multi-channel television; as is promotion of certain programme strands. We have purposely ensured that the current...

Odd screen height on UKTV History by Kennedy McEwen
On my Panasonic iDTV LCD panel I have it set to display widescreen broadcasts of Freeview as wide and non-widescreen as 4:3 (with black borders at the side), thus giving correct aspect ratio whatever format is received. Everything looks fine on all channels except for the UKTV History channel, which often has widescreen images without including the widescreen signal which are thus is shown...

Rigger's Diary: how do they get away with it? by Bill Wright
How about this? For the three years since the place was built the five FM tuners serving the radio distribution system have not worked. In each of the 160 comfy little rooms it has been possible to select between five different channels, each of which went 'shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh'. Finally the managment decided to take decisive action, so I was asked to have a look. The FM aerial was connected...

Wireless aerial extender? by Victor Delta
Can anyone help please? We live in a relatively weak signal strength area although our main rooftop aerial delivers a good signal. However, reception on the small aerial of our portable TV is poor. I would like to be able to use the portable TV in a number of rooms without having to recable the house. Does anyone know of a wireless gizmo (or something else?) that would enable me to overcome...

Unbiased comparison please by Jim S
I have tried to get an unbiased comparison of the "Three for 30" option being offered by Telewest to what I have. What I have is as follows: Freeview box which works well on a good aerial 'most of the time', but needs re-setting a couple of times a week. Plusnet broadband @ 14.99 pm. When it works I get ~6Mbps, but Plusnet is notoriously prone to slowdowns and is having real problems with...
