Default Best Aerial To Receive Digital

Hi,
can anybody suggest a good aerial for receiving digital t.v.
Approx 18 months ago i tried a Nokia Digibox and received nothing, a search
on my postcode tells me i am unable to receive, yet i am only 35 miles from
the Birmingham transmitter at Sutton Coldfield.
Was looking at the Televes DAT 75 (Approx £50), has anybody any experience
with this aerial or is the another grade 1 CAI i can try.

Thanks in Advance

Where are you?
Are you currently receiving your analogue TV from S.C? Is the aerial
horizontally polarised?
What's the analogue reception like, and do you have separate provision for
channel 5 reception?

Hello,

Make sure you have a strong chimney! That aerial is massive so you would be
better going for a normal sized one without silly claims about the gain.
Don't forget the gain figure adds the preamp figure on those. You might
find something with a narrow acceptance angle will be bad unless mounted ona
short fat pole. If it moves slightly the signal will be on and off
depending on the distance from the transmitter.
Go for a decent aerial, good coax and then try a preamp if you need one.
A lot of aerial fitters are doing a bit of a con at the moment by fitting
aerials that are too small or poorly aligned in order for the signal to
break up. The customer is then offered an upgrade and suddenly the problems
go away after paying twice the price.
There are some bad people out there, so refuse to pay hundreds for a cheap
£8 aerial from B&Q and a 6 ft pole to be fitted ! I have seen some right
cowboy jobs, one by a person that claimed to be part of a recognised
organisation. his last occupation was fitting CB aerials using RG58U and
not soldering plugs, well known in the area.

2.5db attenuation per 100 feet at 30Mhz and 400watts capacity, what's the
problem?

It was CB not SETI

Should have soldered the PL259's though.

Default Best Aerial To Receive Digital

hi,
sorry about not giving enough information.
At the moment i am receiving all 5 analogue channels from the SC
transmitter. Picture is excellent on all but CH5 whereby occasionally i get
a small amount of ghosting. The existing aerial ( of unknown make and age)
is horizontal (e-w). At present i have a single aerial booster in the loft
which feeds a 8 way booster/splitter to all rooms in house. I am assuming i
need a grade 1 aerial, is this not the case? Can i get away with using a
much cheaper grade 2?

regards,

dave

Yes, your existing one, most likely. If your analogue reception is OK I
suggest you try again with a Freeview box before altering the aerial.
Only one mux from SC is outside of Gp B.

Which direction from SC are you? I'm about 35 miles due south and may be
able to advise if you're out this way.

When you do put your aerial up, why not insist on wall brackets and good big
rawlbolts.

TV aerial riggers seem to have lost the knack of making chimney lashings
stay lashed, at least they have around here on the sea front in North Wales.

One decent gale from the Irish Sea and the lashings all stretch...

best wishes
Ken

When I replaced mine I took it off the chimney as the stack is too short to
enable me to use a mast of sufficient height. With it gable end mounted I
can securely mount a 16' x 2" mast in T&K brackets using 6 metal anchors.
Keeping 20% of the total mast length below the top bracket is also a shrewd
move.
