House prices are another, related, issue.

And why d'ye think house prices might have gone up to the extent they
have?

It's simple supply and demand. The demand side has shot up due to the
population increase, 60% of which is due to recent immigration. Much of
the rest is due to second, third, and fourth generations of immigrants,
who have a higher birthrate than the indigenous population.

I've just watched John Snow's report from the US. Utter total one-sided

Now Dispatches are on about the housing shortage. They mention that it's
partly due to the 'massive population increase' but they don't say why the
population has increased.

I don't mind the fuzzie-wuzzies so much these days, with their lovely

It's not population increase - in the main the physical shortage is due
to household composition (more smaller households) and empty properties.

So the programme was wrong?

If the problem is that more people live alone why isn't there a price
premium on small flats?

There is round here.

Worse than Jon Snow is the previous economics editor for Channel 4
News, Paul Mason. He's pleasant enough on the telly but very left
leaning and a good mate of wacko Greek economist and
self-proclaimed "game theorist", Yanis Varoufakis, who tried to
bluff Grexit with the EU but lost.

I like you Pamela. You are a good right-thinking girl. We could get on
like a house on fire. I am as attracted to your mind as I am to your
body (as it appears in my dreams).

I also found the bbc program on why the trains are bad lacking in any
details as well. they presented the facts as they saw them, and the fact
that gov and companies blame each other, but then suggested
nationalisation might be a way to go, but never really produced any
convincing evidence of how this was supposed to solve things. To me the
obvious answer is to rewrite the contracts so all the companies colaborate
and don't work against each other might be one way.

Not even possible to have that in the contracts in a way that will see that
happen IMO.

However I got the distinct oppinion that somebody had got at the original
thrust of what was going to be suggested for some reason.

More likely that they just arent much good at producing docos.

Too many half baked tell us what we already know documentaries around,

Sure, but that is with us that understand quite a bit of the basics.

Its not clear how much educating of the average person
veging out in front of the TV is going on with them. Not
even clear how many of those even bother with docos at all.

just to fill schedule space.

On the whole IMO the BBC docos are about the best around.

Of course the reason for population growth is well known.

Yep, those unspeakable immigrants have more brats.

Back some years ago our birth rate was falling below the level at which
the tax paying public could support those who were getting pensions and
who needed healthcare with age,

That's true of the entire modern first world and much of the second world
too. NOT ONE is ever self replacing if you take out immigration now.

so the bright sparks came up with opening up the doors to immigration as
it is well known that in countries with poor records on infant deaths that
they have more babies for at least two generations.

It didnít happen like that. In fact Britain opened the doors to immigrants
right after the war had ended and has in fact made it much harder for all
except EU citizens to move to Britain now that it was then.

And it isnt at least two generations either. Yes, those who migrated
to tend to have more brats than average but their kids hardly ever do.

The big snag of course is that this also then means you need more schools
houses and almost everything else,

Yep.

soaking up the money.

Nope, its one of the reasons Britain is doing much
better than it was in say the 50s economically.

Governments never do see or even consider the whole picture when they do
things.

Quite often they do and its very arguable that allowing all
those immigrants in was bad for Britain as a whole. Same
with the countrys that take a MUCH greater percentage of
immigrants that Britain does, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc.

It isnt even clear that the US is worse off now than it would have
been if it had just shut the doors to immigration after the war.

Japan essentially did that and still did pretty well until China got
its act into gear and decided that capitalism was the way to go.

They think of their budgets only.

The choice to allow higher levels of immigration wasnít a budget
decision. It was a recognition that there weren't enough of the locals
prepared to do the worst jobs and that immigrants would be happy
to do them because their circumstances were so much worse.

It has nothing to do with racial descrimination or ethnic issues, its to
do with idiots in government.

Its far from clear that it was an idiotic decision.

Or that when Britain chose to join the EEC, that anyone realised
that it would eventually morph into the EU which would decide
that the completely free movement of people within the EU was
a very fundamental principle that it wanted to have. Or even that
much thought was given to that when Britain chose to sign the
Treaty of Lisbon etc either. Or even that many realised that
Britain could end up doing so well economically that lots
from the dregs of the EU would decide that their prospects
were much better in Britain than where they come from.

I've been quite surprised at some of Mason's outpourings now that he feels
able to speak his mind. I've read a few of Yanis's blog things, and been
surprised how sensible he seems when he's not making news.

Typical lefty**** tho when it came to the crunch. And nothing sensible
about his hare brained scheme to start printing new drachmas either.

You forgot "British educated and qualified economist" Varoufakis.
My dentist is related to him, a cousin or aunt?? Varoufakis has
recently told Brexit negotiators to expect the same treatment
from the EU hierarchy as he got. I expect worse.

Not possible to get worse because Britain has **** all to lose.

Greece's problems are that German banks lent Greece billions to
spend on German imports encouraged by the German government.

It is in fact much more complicated than that.

Greece can't repay the loans.

Because they don't come even close to raising in taxes what they spend.
That's why they stupidly borrowed so much from the German banks and
****ed it all against the wall on stupidly generous pensions etc.

It's true that the EU played its part in letting Greece get into a
financial pickle.

However it was that wonderful duo, Varoufakis and Tsipras, who
misread their hand and felt Greece was too big to fail. They
played their hand accordingly, with devious twists and turns,
until they ran out of options and lost what little goodwill the EU
had towards them. Plucky little Greece got a bloody nose and is
still recovering.

Its far from clear that it will recover given what was imposed.

Let's hope self-confident Britain doesn't
also misread the EU in the negotiations.

Doesnít matter if it does, its free to trade under the WTO rules.

I did enjoy the article. Thanks. So who is really wacko?

Varoufakis. Typical lefty****.
