I don't quite understand why it should need a better signal to
synchronise that for normal operation.

You don't. It's just that when synchronising, you can see it hasn't got a
signal. At other times you trust that it has one.

Mostly true, my desktop clock clearly shows it has lost the signal once
I move it from the windowsill. However our wall clock managed to "fall
back" from summer time quite happily, but would not then resync. from
the same position when the batteries went a week later (and we
installed new ones of course) - it needed to be moved onto a windowsill
for 10 minutes.

I'm not sure that all of these clocks actually look for the signal 100%
of the time. They probably turn off the receiver for extended periods of
time in order to get a years life from a single AA cell. On my LCD
clocks the radio sync indicator flashes when synchronising and I seldom
see it flashing.

All my radio control clocks manage to correctly change to summer time
although I don't what time in the morning they do so - it may be a few
hours late.

This looks like the German MSF movement in my clock:

http://www.u-t-s.de/radio%20controlled_1.htm

"Automatic functions a Initial setup with receiving and adjusting of
hands, checking of internal time during normal run ( every 2 hours) and
adjust hands position to correct time. Checking of absolute hands
position (every day) with adjusting if required."

The "Click your selected signal range for more info" bit of the page
doesn't seem to work but the data for the MSF version is he

http://www.u-t-s.de/PDF_Daten/583374_MSF%
20RC_wallclock+DO_Specification.pdf

or

Does anybody know where I can buy these movements in small quantities in
the UK?

I can find millions of standard quartz movements but nobody seems to
carry the MSF ones. I've got 4 or 5 conventional quartz clocks around
the house that I'd like to convert if I can find them.

If you are prepared to buy online, eBay?

Argos might be worth a look: catalogue number 623/7475.

http://www.argos.co.uk

It's not very pretty but at £12.99 it's less than half that ebay price.
You could install its movement in something more to your liking, of
course.

That's the one in my wall clock, sometimes it takes days to update.
It seems very RF insensitive compared to my Oregon Scientific digital LCD
clocks

Looks very reasonable by comparison with others - except ...

"Sorry, this item is currently out of stock to pick up at your 10
nearest stores"

"Currently out of stock for delivery"
