Just noticed that the BBC continues to provide a traditional teletext service on one of its digital television services -- BBC World (Astra 19,2 East). It is also worth mentioning that the teletext services of a number of other broadcasters are also accessible even though their video and audio is scrambled eg een, canvas, NED-1, NED-2 etc. |

So presumably then you can only see this on older tellies or are we saying
that its a look alike service, rather than an actual service on the old spare lines of a decoded signal. The teletext data is sent in a transparent data channel within the DVB-S transport stream, the satellite box then takes the data, and inserts it into the VBI. Of course the reason it is not directly transmitted is:- a: The VBI is not encoded in the MPEG video coding b: Even if it was, the MPEG compression would mangle the VBI data pulses anyway |

What we are saying is that on your DVB satellite receiver you press the TEXT (as in Teletext) button and you see the Teletext service. How I came to notice this is that I changed stations to BBC World and noticed at the top of the picture a bit of white flashing at the top of the picture a little bit like the old teletext lines at the top of an analog picture. So when I pressed the TEXT button on the remote, lo and behold BBC World teletext appeared. |

Semi Retired asked: Once LONDON goes digital?.... Sorry if I do not understand the question except to say ... Analog switch off in the London region will have zero effect on the teletext service carried by BBC World. |

But, 1 They use the first 2 dozen or so of the existing Ceefax news pages. That easy source will be cut. 2 Once London does not have Ceefax why should anybody else? It may appear terribly old fashioned to those who organise things. The temptation will be to dispense with it. Time will tell - unless you know better. I have been watching satellite text for some time. The euromillions lottery past results are on RTE but not on the BBC BBC World (News) has Ceefax on Hotbird, Astra 1 and Thor. You can also get text in Romanian French and German |
