Can anyone recommend a small 12V monitor/TV? I have a Nokia 5800 phone
which has SatNav built in, and very useful it is too - but the screen is a little small. Now phone also has a TV out and with a good monitor the picture is pretty good so I thought "install a small TV/monitor in the car and use that for the screen of the SatNav". Problem is what would be a good model? It should be 16:9 and maybe a 5 or 6inch screen (diagonal) but with a nice, clear display. I've tried the screens which came with our cheapie portable DVD player (oh the bliss of quiet children in the back!) but these are of poor quality and no good for anything with text on the screen. So, anyone got any suggestions? Input should be L & R audio & composite video. Thanks for any suggestions, Paul DS. |

nav. Small portable TVs are not good value. And composite video ain't good for a decent display such as this. It's on my list but there are two things that might stop me... 1. I rarely drive which is why I have a phone doing SatNav and not a SatNav (actually I also use the SatNav on my bicycle when cycling around London). 2. The Nokia SatNav app. is free, with regular free map updates. From what I can see real SatNavs both charge for updates, and have a nasty habit of suddenly saying "what, you're still using v7 of our product? Tough! Updates only for versions 8+ from now on". But worth considering again. Paul DS. |

Can't see the difference between carrying a satnav when needed against a similar sized TV. Modern sat navs also have a decent life on their internal batteries. And if my phone is anything to go by also have rather better satellite receivers. Other thing is sat navs can usually be bought with a variety of mountings including those for a bike. I doubt a TV can. 2. The Nokia SatNav app. is free, with regular free map updates. Not found that on either of mine. But it may well happen at the budget end. But worth considering again. Other thing is sat navs can usually be bought with a variety of mountings including those for a bike. I doubt a TV can. I use mind hanging around my neck with a wired headset. The audio feed is more than good enough at the speed (or rather lack of...) that I cycle. The only issue I had was that a Bluetooth headset the phone (or perhaps the headset) breaks the Bluetooth link when quiet, presumably to save power - but it's not quick enough to re-establish so I was missing the start of the instructions and had to switch to the wired headset. 2. A little bit more digging around the TV/monitor idea indicates that at the low end TV/monitors, the resolution is terrible (worse than the phone!) or I could go for high end, starting around £150 or so. But you'll still have the problem of a composite video feed. Thanks for the heads up on the TomToms. FYI, to my TV at home (a 32inch Panasonic), the Nokia's composite out is actually pretty good. I can't imagine getting a decent small screen for it though given that for the price I could almost certainly get a "proper" SatNav. I'll live with the phone for a while until the eyesight gets worse and the small screen really is too small ;-). Paul DS. |

Can anyone recommend a small 12V monitor/TV? Is 11 inches too large? Get one of these and a power inverter and you will enjoy excellent quality images for a very thin lightweight monitor. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-XEL-1-Widescreen-OLED-Freeview/dp/B0018RRUL6 |

And more than treble the value of the car at the same time. Early adoption of new technology comes at a very high price ![]() The other problem with that SONY model is that it is not even full HD 1920x1080. The problem is that OLED development and manufacture has stalled over the past couple of years (probably economic recession related) and so the price has remained too high for almost all consumers. |
