Default Humax Foxsat HDR: problem using an analogue Sony TV

In preparation for the analogue switchoff in April we've invested in a
Humax Foxsat HDR (500GB ), and have already taken over the Sky dish with
a 2nd feed.

Until we get round to (soon!) replacing the Sony KV-28FX68U, however,
we've struck a couple of annoyances:

(1) Trying to map the TV's commands onto the Humax remote, less
than half of the 3-digit codes given in the Humax manual would 'take'
at all, and then only the on/off button would work. It was the Mute
function I was aiming for!).
Anyone got a good code for the above TV, please?

(2) With the Humax muted (not TV) there was a buzzing sound from the
TV that varied with the amount of white in the picture. This was not
there when the TV was muted (nor was it there when we had Sky and used
the Sky mute button - but perhaps it was linked to the TV Mute
function).

The buzzing/humming is not audible when the sound is 'on'.

Is a puzzle, and reminds me of an earthing problem I had with a hi-fi
system decades ago...

(I've checked the Humax-TV Scart plugs are firmly in (using the Scart
lead tnat came with the Humax). Perhaps try another Scart lead?)

Sounds as if the video signal is cross-talking into the audio, could well be
the scart lead, you could try another one, or it might be the EHT circuitry in
the TV getting into the audio somewhere. How physically close is the Humax to
the TV ?

Presumably your replacement TV will be an HD flat screen ? If so, of course
you'll be using an HDMI lead between the Humax and TV, so that should
hopefully be fine.

BTW DON'T pay more than a fiver for the HDMI lead !

Experience of using recent Sonys as RF-fed and AV-fed CCTV monitors
suggests that they react badly to slightly out-of-spec video.

Examples:

Video voltage too high from camera caused video buzz that varied with
picture content. Cured by crude potential divider arrangement.

Video voltage too high from camera caused reds to smear badly Cured by
crude potential divider arrangement.

Unaccountable uncurable sideways wobbling (line sync) from certain
cameras (other TV sets on the same system unaffected).

At least Sonys always seem to autotune DSB RF signals. A lot of
supermarket flatscreens seem to plough on regardless without storing them.

Ok - will try that.

There's a 3" gap between the top of the Humax and the underneath of
the top of the cabinet on which the TV sits.

Yes.

Yes.

As expensive as that? ;-)

Actually, an HDMI cable came in the Humax' box - as did the scart
cable.

Will try moving the Humax to underneath the DVD player.

(Though now I've got the TV controls mapped onto the Humax remote it's
no problem muting the TV rather than the Humax.)

Took out the Scart cable that came with the Humax and replaced it
with the flat 'belt' Scart lead that we had been using with Sky.

Now no audio interference!

Moved it lower down, under the old VCR recorder.
No difference.
But after swapping the Scart cable that came with the
Humax for the flat 'belt' cable we had ben using with Sky the problem
went away...
