I just saw a new advert - or at least I hadn't seen it before - on the
BBC promoting the DSO help scheme for the elderly. The ad had a song
playing in the background: "Everybody's Talking at Me." The next line
after the title is "I don't hear a word they say". I thought how
appropriate those two lines were for a "public service" announcement
that many are likely to ignore. I don't suppose that the producers had
that in mind, though, but rather that they lacked any sense of irony.

Slightly less slick, but more down to earth, here's how the idea of DSO was
relayed in South Africa on their breakfast news show:-

Is the diagram at 1:40 making a political point?

Interesting. They are introducing DTT this year and switching off
analogue some time in the future.

I have no idea of the details of what analogue channels they have now
and what DTT channels will be available in the future, but I strongly
suspect they have more room for manaouver channel-allocation-wise
because of the much lower population density than we have and the
greater distances between population centres.

The population density of SA is 41.4/sqkm compared with the UK's
255.6/sqkm. And perhaps more importantly the area of SA is 1,221,037
sqkm compared with the UK's 243,610 sqkm.

I was merely commenting that if you ring the mob doing the switchover
stuff, they seem quite chatty and do have a healthy sense of humour.
I've not seen the latest ads, but they do all tent to stereotype folk as
disabled, elderly, both of just thick!

Well, I'm not so sure, the folk up in Tyneside doing the business

You will have to explain the reference to Tyneside, I don't
understand.
Did you get the Youtube link I sent for the advert? here it is again.

Thay obviously don't understand, either, that many people, the elderly
in particular, like to have information conveyed without musical
pollution to drown out or distract them from the message.

Are you saying that the elderly do not like ballads or opera?

It's much harder to decifer the speech if there is (loud) background
music especially if you are a little hard of hearing.

That reminds me of when Microsoft used "Start Me Up" by the Rolling
Stones to advertise Windows 95. Strangely they missed out the lyric
"You make a grown man cry".
