The builders name was Penrose ;-)
I know sod all about laying bricks, but the second and third courses
from the top don't seem to have bonds.

No they don't with seems as you say rather odd. It'd would have been
interesting to see round the other side of the chimney I expect the top
course must have held the lashing wire.

Assuming of course it had a corner plate and on the brick too!..
