Radio 3 on a Sony dab radio is 'consistantly' of very low volume compared
with all other radio stations that I receive. It's weak even when the
'signal strength' is fine. It's in the NW London, finchley central/mill hill
area.

Anything that I can do about this would you say?

Radio 3 has always had a very low audio level as they are deadly afraid that
someone will suddenly make a very loud noise. They are proud of the fact
that they don't compress anything, unlike Classic FM.

Anything that I can do about this would you say?

Turn up the volume?

DAB isn't good enough to listen to Radio 3 stuff - I've gone back to FM. It
is in proper stereo for a start.

I'm aware you said it's consistently low, but have you considered that
your ears might have become accustomed to the heavily optomoded sound
of most other radio stations, and Radio 3 might just be giving you
something closer to the dynamic range that you would hear in a concert
hall?

When did that happen?

AFAIK it's the other way round. Radio 3 has always attempted to
broadcast the full dynamic range. It was Classic FM that decided to use
dynamic range compression.

Radio 3 used to try to broadcast the full dynamic range, That stopped
about 20 years ago. But DAB might be immune to the compression.

Bearing mind, if lstening to Classical music, the average level is only mf
- headroom needs to be left for ff and even fff.

My Videologic DAB tuner has a button on the remote for turning DRC on and
off - it used to work on some stations - it seems to work today on BBC Radio
7. But what a waste of money that box was: £250 in 2005 and a year later
all data rates went down to telephone quality.

Just checked, there is DRC control on Radio 3 and BBC R4 Extra but not on
CFM.

the compression on CFM is amazing - sometimes the loud bits sound quieter
than the soft as if the singer has been choked. Almost unlistenable to (poor
English).
