Default LG RHT498H Hard Disk / DVD Recorder queries

My LiteOn LVW-5405 HDD/DVD video recorder has decided to throw a wobbly,
and it looks like I'll have to replace it. [FWIW, it still records OK,
and the played-back video output is OK. The fault is that the
played-back audio output has decided to become permanently switched
through to the audio input. Fortunately, it still copies OK from the
hard disk to the DVD.]

Anyway.....
It's obvious that I need a new machine.

I want something I can make the occasional archive copy to a DVD, and
the LG RHT498H (which has a single freeview tuner, a 250GB hard disk and
DVD drive) seems a good economical bet (£170 from Dixons).

However, I'm finding the user reviews very confusing. They range from
'absolutely fabulous' to 'total junk'. Two repeated problems are 'Can't
turn the subtitles off, despite what the manual says' and 'Haven't found
a way of copying from the hard disk to the DVD'.

Can anyone who has experience of the LG RHT498H (or LG RHT497H) please
advise me whether these problems are real, or are they simply a result
of an inability to RTFM?
