I have noticed that the picture can suddenly appear to zoom in
slightly and zoom out again during programmes on HD channels. This was particularly noticeable in a recent programme on Channel 4 (The Queen's Hidden Cousins). It seems an odd artifact. I am wondering if it could be due to the 1080i/1080p switching, or to upscaling, and if it is specific to HD. I have noticed similar effects on BBC but not as noticeable. Can any of the experts comment? (Note to Mr M: this is a request for information not an invitation to start an argument.) |

Can any of the experts comment? I know exactly what it is. It's the good old p/i switching thing again on HD channels. On Sony TV sets, when you set 'full pixel' mode it only applies to the state the TV is in at that moment. So you need to catch it in both P and I modes, and set to 'Full Pixel' accordingly. It can be a challenge to catch it in time ! I've moaned to Sony about it. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. www.paras.org.uk |

Could I create the 1080p by using DVD input (HDMI) to allow me to set full pixel mode for 1080p and broadcast input (after checking it this is 1080i which it is for most of the time) to set full pixel mode for 1080i? |

That's one way to to it. Alternatively you could wait for a movie on one of the HD channels, that should remain in P mode. Also, some sort of live electronically shot fast moving action, should keep it in I mode. I'd try the football on BBC 1 HD right now, or the horse racing on C4 for I mode, and one of the three movies currently on ITV (I assume STV is showing them too) for P mode Good Luck ! -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. www.paras.org.uk |

It depends if STV and ITV are in dispute this week ! Good Luck ! I enjoy a challenge ! (Setting up digital TV with signals coming from three transmitters was a challenge also. I don't know why all the publicity implied it was easy.) |

Found the settings okay. Are you saying both need to be 'Full pixel' or just that they need to be the same setting? The i-Manual seems to be recommending 'Normal'. |

Is there anyone who might read such things left at Sony who understands
enough to be able to comment intelligently about it though. Brian -- Brian Gaff - Note:- In order to reduce spam, any email without 'Brian Gaff' in the display name may be lost. They need to be the same for both 'Normal' is about 3% overscan, which means you're not matching the native resolution of the display with the (maximum) native resolution of the input signal. You'll end up with some of the picture cropped, and introduce unnecessary scaling artefacts. There's supposed to be a flag in the DVB stream to force displays into 1:1 pixel match mode AIUI, but as usual it's ignored by the manufacturers. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. www.paras.org.uk |

I have set both to 'full pixel' mode. I see this affects HD only. |
