If you can catch this on iPlayer (BBC4 last night) it's very
interesting. Firstly there's a section near the start that appears to be
videotaped, with a very messy sync problem at the start and finish, and
also a bit as it plays. Then there are what appear to be small black
objects contaminating the field of view. It looks as if it was filmed
off a TV screen that needed a wash. Also take a look at the studio
monitor. It looks like they got it from Radio Rentals!

Also, it's interesting how her husband John Le Mesurier manages to not
say anything nice about her. At the time of the programme she was having
an affair with a younger man, and he knew, but no-one else did.

And her grandma, who appeared quite healthy and compos mentis, but was
by my calculations a subject of Queen Victoria until she was in her
mid-thirties.

From the very back of my memory, they used a domestic set as a monitor for
the hit to watch as it was in shot. The normal studio monitors were steel
cased pro jobbies.

TIYL in those days were mostly live - but the actual pickup often
recorded. Mainly to prevent someone saying no. ;-)

Preliminary divorce proceedings were already underway at the time of
recording, and I think that Le Mesurier had moved out of their home, so
why wouldn't anyone have known ? Surely, their respective families &
friends knew.

Oh, that's interesting. I thought the divorce wasn't until a few years
later.

The dramatisation of the story, 'Hattie', was shown last night on BBC4,
quite an eye opener and worth a view on iPlayer if available.
