Because the concept of a Yorkshireman getting his 'local' news from Manchester is the best thing that ever happened to television. ;-) Well, that's the way it used to be. Deja vu ! BBC 1 - Home Moss - left and right of the Pennines. They even gave us all some strange Welsh programme at lunchtimes. ITV was Granada (Manchester), - Emley Moor Ch10, Winter Hill Ch9, before YTV was even thought of. And good ole Diddy David Hamilton on ABC at weekends. Strange that northern ABC became London's Thames TV. |

London, UTV, and Central W on 10891 H Granada, Meridian S, and STV W on 10906 V posted about this some days ago but no-one replied and now I can't find my posting* (it was a comment in an existing thread about something else). Are there several ITV1+1s? * a coconut to anyone who can find it. Ah, 'Dring Dring at 7.28pm' ? I thought there was a YTV/Tyne Tees +1, but it seems not, the Granada version must cover Gra,YTV,TTTV and Border, which explains why you get it your side of the Pennines. Oh well there you go then. I suppose I could have gone through all the x00 FTA channels on 28E, or alternately told a Freesat box it was in Basingstoke. But life's too short to peel olives. I wonder how many people who get in from work in YTV land at sevenish and idly flick through the channels will come to regard Granada's local prog as 'theirs', and will vaguely wonder why the news seems to be mostly about Liverpool and Manchester. Went on line and found a PC nearer Oxford and got BBC Oxford (just S. of Northampton, there's no 'natural' region, but S comes up to Banbury and seems bearer home than East Angular does) and ITV Meridian. The ITV region does cover here but also goes to Kent! ITV Central South would be better. Until this thread, I hadn't realised how few regions were available. -- Peter. ITV 1 Central South (let alone +1) no longer exists. It was merged with Meridian North about 5 years ago, effectively combining Hannington with Oxford to produce ITV Thames Valley. Ridge Hill that was also Cen S was returned to Cen West Midlands, but an additional analogue allocation was found and Ridge Hill carries ITV West to Cheltenham and Gloucester. After DSO this year Ridge Hill will carry two ITV/4 muxes, one 'W Mids' the other 'West'. (Confused yet ?) Then, about two years ago ITV Thames Valley was ditched, and Oxford and Hannington combined into Meridian South, which despite having an opt out for Kent and E Sussex is to all intents and purpose a huge useless region stretching from Dorset to Kent, and the IOW to Banbury. In fact, ITV regional news is on the skids really, I suspect as soon as ITV manage to bribe Ofcom, it'll vanish completely in all areas. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. http://www.paras.org.uk/ |

Of course there might have been technical and cost reasons for the so-called "wrong decisions". Well, from a technical aspect there would have been interesting differences. The ITA built up their Band III network to more of less mirror the BBC's Band I coverage. The UHF network, and co siting arrangement between the Beeb and ITA that started in the 60s 'cherry picked' those VHF sites to form its framework. I wonder how the BBC would have responded to ITV's local structure, in terms of their output, would they have developed local TV stations, rather than opt outs from the national service ? If ITV had been a local service, I suspect today we'd have a far messier UHF network, most probably with more than one UHF aerial required to receive all available services. Commercial radio was launched in the 70s as a local rather than regional network, and consequently today radio services are delivered from diverse sites in many cases. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. http://www.paras.org.uk/ |
