Could someone kindly give me a lead? - as a tv addict some years ago,
I threw mine out and haven't bought one since so am well behind the curve and not able to fathom this out. A friend recently bought a samsung ue32c5800 and being even more inept than I am on setting it up asked if I could do it for her. I went through the initialising and tried every which way to get it to auto seek without any success. OTOH, an old freeview box when connected as an external source for the tv was fine - all the usual stations were there and she could watch happily. But the tv has HD freeview and although HD is not available in this region just yet it will be so ideally the tv needs to be working independently with its own freeview tuner. Having failed a second time to get it to recognise any stations I contacted samsung help. A guy spent an exhaustive 30 minutes on the phone, failed too to get it to work and advised returning the set as faulty which we did and it has been duly replaced. New set, same problem! Ruling out the only very remote possibility of a second set with an identical malfunction, could someone offer a possible diagnosis? Is it possible that the samsung freeview tuner is not as sensitive as that in the freeview box? Might an aerial booster do the trick? Grateful for any insights.... |

Are you plugging the very same aerial cable in to the new TV as was plugged in to the old freeview box? Do the analogue channels work? (I assume you still have analogue available as you don't have Freeview HD yet.) -- Richard |

Hi, Does the TV have an analogue tuner and a Digital tuner. (often a button marked TV/DTV) If so, are you sure you have it in DTV Freeview mode and are entering the setup menu of the DTV mode If the analogue broadcasts in your region have been switched off already and you are tuning in the analogue tuner function of the TV and not the DTV tuner then you would get no channels!. I see this issue quite a lot as the handyman in a sheltered housing unit in a post DSO area. Hope this helps Regards Marcus |

Yes, same cable. *It's annoying but the separate freeview box - which works fine with the tv - needs a screw-on type coax plug - (is this called an 'F' type?) whereas the tv uses the old-fashioned type (been around for years - just a push fit). *So it's a bit of a headache since I'm having to swap and re-fix the plugs each time I want to try either the box+tv configuration or just tv on its own. I've been just a little concerned that my plug assembly has been less than 'tidy' but I'm fairly confident that there's no shorting with the braiding and every time I go back to the working box+tv combination there's never a problem. Do the analogue channels work? *(I assume you still have analogue available as you don't have Freeview HD yet.) This is where my tv education gets very thin. *As you say, there's no freeview HD here yet (southampton area) so I assume the old freeview box is delivering an analogue signal to the tv via the scart lead. All channels seem to work fine 99.99% of the time - I noticed a 1 second freeze on a particular channel on the picture last night but that was an isolated event in a whole evening's viewing. -- Richard Sounds like this is a Freesat TV and you have the Aerial lead plugged in the the Sat input. But just looking at this model no reference to sat is made.... Looking at the Samsung website http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/t...il&tab=support There are a couple if items about retuning your TV. Do these help at all? |

Are you sure it is a freeview box (with a normal aerial) and not a freesat box (+ dish)? (gulp) well, I did warn that I was a bit of a dunce about all this! Yes, you're absolutely right it's freesat...and I've just been informed that it's a dish!! apologies if this twists my question round to need re-answering... Does the freeview box not have an aerial out (pass-through) Belling Lee plug connector to allow the analogue signals through direct? I thought that was normal so you could just use a normal TV flylead to daisy-chain the two. ...the only outputs I see on the freesat box are audio out (rca), spdif and LNB out. You can buy adapters from F to Belling Lee for about 50p (or make up a cable) rather than keep replacing plugs. ...I wondered about that. I'll pick one of those up if I can find it.. |

Plus, the samsung guy spent some considerable time himself on the phone talking me through all the available options. If the analogue broadcasts in your region have been switched off already and you are tuning in the analogue tuner function of the TV and not the DTV tuner then you would get no channels!. but, as I mention, I've tried the tuner on both digital, analogue and also there's a dual scan which takes in both possibilities. All are deaf to any incoming info. I see this issue quite a lot as the handyman in a sheltered housing unit in a post DSO area. Hope this helps Regards Marcus |

Then you've been plugging a sat dish into the TV's aerial input socket. You won't pick up any useful UHF TV signal with that arrangement. You will need to install a UHF TV aerial and downlead before progressing any further I'm afraid.
