Perhaps my memory is at fault here. However I don't think he stopped speaking entirely at that ellipsis... No, your memory is not at fault. Why not relive the whole moment once again and admire the rhetoric of the Conservative and Unionist Party's most distinguished and prominent elder statesman today (who has allegedly kicked a child in public but never been prosecuted for assault). http://www.telegraph.co.UK/news/newsvideo/7858570/Norman-Tebbit-my-father-got-on-his-bike-to-look-for-a-job.html |

The problems are, however that 'our' cultural values tend to evolve and change all the time anyway. Most of the current ones were invented by the Conservative and Unionist Party in the 19th Century, along with the import of a number of German pagan traditions like chopping down trees and bringing them into the house during the winter solstice. |

Not just one Government - although the USA is a good candidate for the main country whose Private Sector drove the problem into such an extreme bubble. And curiously I'm not the only one who predicted that the Bush/Halliburton axis would pursue a scorched earth policy if voted out of office. I just hadn't realised they'd take down the whole world's economy while they were at it. |

On the other hand maybe your concerns differ significantly from those of the rest of us Ordinary People. I meet a lot of people, from all walks of life. I listen to them. I constantly get the impression that many of their concerns are ignored or marginalised by mainstream politicians. It surprises me how many young people feel that way. It's worrying because if they became totally disenchanted or disillusioned with the democratic process we could be in real trouble. The main issue that people are unhappy about is immigration. Over and over again I hear people saying that we have allowed too many people into the country for too long, and that we allow people in who have no intention of integrating and who just want to form enclaves within the UK. Some people express this in a racist way because they are angry, and know no better. Many people who are clearly not racist express these opinions, yet they know that if they speak out they will be branded as racist. Luckily most people can see the difference between having concerns about immigration and being racist, which is why the BNP did so badly in the election. Incidentally I think a lot of people have come to realise that Labour had a deliberate policy of encouraging mass immigration for their own electoral reasons. The other big moan that people have is that we are too soft on crime. Bill |
