Is there anyway to update the software in the Nokia MediaMaster 9850T? It's
an older OnDigital box. Thanks Peter Geddes -- All incoming and outgoing emails & files scanned by Norton AntiVirus 2003 |

Even doing simple stuff like changing the menu logos would be useful. Wonder if it's written in c++. Must be written in BBC Basic given the speed it runs at. I'd like it put in the public domain just for the opportunity to see how they managed to make it so bad. Pete. |

Pete. Moores law actually states that transistor density doubles every year (or so). The response to this is that computer programmers become twice as lazy every year so the speed of software remains constant. A CS student in my flat was told by one of his lecturers that "it doesn't matter what you program your projects in, as computers can complete any job you're likely to do instantly," in response to the question "Why are you teaching us java? It's too slow." (Anecdotal, I have no proof of this.) Needless to say he taught himself C++ and x86 assembly in his own time. |

: ISTR that the code "belongs" to Canal+. So Nokia can't release it anyway. Yes - all the old OnDigital/ITV Digital code was supplied by Canal+ and, AFAIR, manufacturers just added the STB specific interface(s). The only worthwhile? upgrade they ever made (and they were forced to do this by their ITC agreement) was adding Digital Teletext to the earlier STBs. All the later "upgrades" seemed to be adding more and more code which attempted to verify that the smartcard was a totally legal one. They never even changed the graphics in the menus from OnDigital to ITV Digital! |

After the software update to include (very slow) Digital teletext *all* updates to this STB seemed to just add anti-piracy smartcard checking code (which is no longer needed). They never even changed the menus titles! |
