Thanks; I went to Richer today to return my Philips and they offered
me the Mitsubishi box, which I was a bit wary about, snip

It's working beautifully now, but I haven't used any other ftv boxes.
It seems a lot quicker than cable and satellite boxes (analogue and
digital) I've used in the past, but not very recently.

I said:
Some of the new screen graphics are too contrasty...
but that was ********, it's the bright white teletext loading screen
that's too much for the telly.

I now have (almost) added a digital audio spdif output. I haven't
built an output buffer to protect it yet, it's sitting open in front
of me, with a selection of probes inside connected to my soundcard.
It wasn't easy to find the datasheet for that, and it's got
confidential written across each page! Sounds very good though.

(I doubt if it would ever have upgraded over the air because I can't
get Mux 1.)

I don't know when that upgrade was/is, I assumed I'd missed it.

I forgot to mention, the most unexpected and very welcome effect of
the upgrade, my borderline muxes now come in perfectly. UKHistory now
watchable, no sound and garbage picture before upgrade; no more
dropouts on BBC7, which always came at the most annoying moments.
This is possible because so much of the processing beyond the front
end is handled digitally by a sony chip, this sort of thing was
unimaginable just a few years ago - who would have thought a software
change could affect their reception!
Quote:
"Due to technological advances in the industry, Sony can also provide
manufacturers with the opportunity to give their customers excellent
reception even in very difficult conditions such as in the presence of
analogue TV interference, multipath and mobile channels. The
CXD1973R?s robustness is due to the careful design of the equaliser in
the demodulator and also to the sampling of the analogue signal using
a very high performance 10-bit ADC converter. "

Yes, I do have to open everything I buy! I need to know what's
inside,
Alex
