'Quality' displays as zero.

I've found that if I hold the LNB about 1cm from my metal fridge door,
the signal level goes to zero, but goes to 70% again when in contact.
This looks to me like the LNB is oscillating, and forming a standing
wave facing the door.

Is this a fault, and if so is it likely to be the LNB or the receiver?
I was hoping to use the displayed signal strength as an aid to
pointing the dish.

The interface is fairly horrible but I can learn to live with that. However
I am struggling to understand how standby works. The remote has a very
prominent On/Off or Standby button, however if the machine is placed in
standby, the scheduled recordings are wiped and the EPG is lost. I had
expected this to work like a VHS video, it takes itself out of standby to
record then does back into standby. The EPG on my Sony television loads
instantly.

Have I missed something or how to other people live with this? Do they
leave the box on 24/7 which isn't very energy efficient?

Thanks
The are probably tied together electrically, but there is a fair chance
they are not actually earthed. This takes on particular importance where
a switch is feeding multiple dwellings, and you want to avoid a
An obvious need has come to mind: I need a simple device that will
indicate the presence of transmissions at 433.92MHz. Thus I can see
how noisy or quiet my RF environment is.

I might spend ages fiddling with the aerials, transmitter and receiver
of my wireless slave clock arrangement, only to find the problem is due
to competing transmissions from other SRDs.

I don't need to decode anything, merely detect a transmission.

Any ideas? Perhaps I could hack into a cheap wireless doorbell
receiver and find something of use.
> OK - I think I've finally understood the difference between a quad and a quattro LNB.
>
> (a quattro *must* be fed into a multiswitch, but then provides as-many-as-outputs satellite feeds)

Yup.

IIUC there are some multi-switches that can also generate the line
voltage and tone signal required to control a quad LNB in the same way
as a receiver does. Hence allowing it to permanently command each of the
four outputs into the required state.

(cross posting this to uk.tech.digital-tv since I am sure there will be
folks there than can recommend a brand that does this)

FYI the last one I used was a Triax switch - and that could not work
with a quad, and needed a quatro.

> It looks like I want to change my octo for a quatrro - and buy a 5-input (quattro + UHF/VHF), 12-output multiswitch, and suitable decombining 3 and 4 way faceplates.

Yes, although you might get away without a LNB change if you can find a
suitable switch.
What's special about Channel 28?!
This week's was pulled for some reason, and "Lewis" put out in it's

That suggests that either itv are being sloppy, or they've decided that
it's the slot that gets the same number not the programme.

Haven't read the ETSI or whatever on series record, but I was always
under the impression that each programme should have a unique number to
enable PVRs to track it across date, time and even channel changes.

This has happened before with itv programmes. It doesn't seem to happen
with BBC programmes.

Anyone else find this?
Don't think it's anything which hasn't been mentioned here before, but
is what is stated in the second paragraph accurate: "Culture Minister Ed
Vaizey said an estimated 945,000 households which use signal amplifiers
to boost their television reception could be affected, while another
953,000 which rely on communal aerials could have their coverage
disturbed."?

Why should it affect signal amplifiers? Breakthrough? Or is it only
meant to apply to indoor aerials with a built-in amplifier?
